Common wedding photography mistakes and how to avoid them
Your wedding photography is hands-down essential for capturing your special day and reliving all the moments and emotions of the day. So here are some things you definitely DON’T want to do, and our tips for avoiding them!
Mistake #1 Doing too little research
Many couples hop on Instagram and think they have found a photographer just based on their strong online presence. While this is a good starting point, it’s crucial to view a photographer’s portfolio and reviews so that you know there’s a good match.
Top tip: We are experts at Gold Coast wedding photography. That’s pretty much all we do. So we have developed an eye for the lighting, the environments and the people in this part of our beautiful world. So check out our website gallery for examples of previous work, and if there’s a match, let’s talk!
Mistake #2 Rushing through portraits
We understand that wedding days are hectic, and it’s easy to get caught up in the rush of things, but not allocating enough time for photos is a common mistake to make. Rushing leads to poorly composed shots, missed opportunities and a general lack of quality.
Top tip: Allocate plenty of time for your wedding photos. Talk to us about how much time we’ll need for each part of your wedding, and we can work with you to make sure everything runs to schedule. Remember, these photos are ones you will cherish for many years to come.
Mistake #3 Not communicating with the photographer
One of the most significant mistakes that couples make is not sharing their expectations with their photographer. It’s essential to sit down with your photographer before the big day and discuss how you’d like your wedding to run. This will ensure that you’re both on the same page, and the photographer will be able to capture your ‘feel’ for the day.
Top tip: At Feather & Finch Photography we schedule a consultation with you and have a really clear conversation about what you want. We even share our ultimate wedding day run sheet template, so everyone knows all the details.
Mistake #4 Over-posing or controlling the shoot
While it’s natural to want to capture every moment of your special day, over-posing can result in stiff and unnatural-looking photos. On your big day, the only job for you to do is to be in the moment and celebrate your love for each other. For us, we thrive on capturing that blend of perfect shots and candid moments.
Top tip: Work with us to find the right balance between posed and candid shots. Trust your photographer and know that they have your best interests at heart. Centre yourself and breathe!
Mistake #5 Asking for the finished photos ASAP!
We get it – you’ll be itching to see the whole album as soon as possible, but many couples don’t realise that the finished product takes time. At Feather & Finch Photography, we go through an extensive editing process, and this takes time.
Top tip: Be patient and kind and remember our workload also happens after your wedding day. Try to avoid adding extra pressure or requests that may delay things even further.
