Tips for an Unppluged Wedding

Bride and groom outdoor ceremony Gabbinbar Homestead

Something many couples haven’t thought of before the big day is what to do about guests wanting to take photos of the big moments. It’s totally understandable that your friends and family want to capture these moments, but this can both take people out of the moment and ruin your professional photographs.

During the ceremony, most photographers will focus on you, but they will also try to capture the crowd reactions and moments between your loved ones. It can be a shame if the photos all show Iphones or even Ipads held in the air.

Lots of couples also feel that they would rather guests didn’t post any pics on social media; after all, it’s your special news to share. So, what are some ways you can handle the phone situation?

  • Go unplugged and ask your guests to keep their phones and devices tucked away for the duration.

  • Ask that people don’t take any photos during the ceremony but let them go for it at the reception.

  • Have the celebrant or MC make an announcement asking people to pop their phones away (so you don’t have to).

  • Ask guests not to post to social but maybe start a group chat with your friends where people can share their favourite pics of the night.

  • Put polaroid cameras on the tables at the reception to satisfy the selfie urge.

I’ve noticed that people chat and enjoy themselves more when there are no phones, so don’t be afraid to ask for what you want.
