The complete guide to wedding portraits
For wedding photographers like me, I’m always looking to reveal the uniqueness of an individual through an image. Have a read of my tips and tricks for delivering the best portraits of you and your partner.
A bit of planning
Think of the atmosphere you want to show in your portraits. Love and tenderness? Fun and frolics? Classic or contemporary? This pre-planning will help set you at ease when taking portraits. Think about the backdrop and the setting – it’ll be worth the extra bit of effort.
Practice before the day
Start to get familiar and comfy in front of the camera. Everyone can feel a little awkward with a big lens in their face, so do a dry run with friends or set up a tripod at home and push past those bashful moments.
Put on some music
We all know that music can instantly change your mood, so crank on the tunes (choose the right music to match your atmosphere and setting), relax into the vibe, and make way for some spontaneity.
Remember to connect
The camera never lies, so remember, this is all about the two of you. Enjoy each other’s company and look into each other’s eyes. Remind yourself what you love about each other and feel the connection blossom.
Movement helps
We’re not living in the dark ages of photography, so remember that you can move during a portrait session. In fact, this helps to see the real you, so wear something that you can freely express yourself in.
Don’t overthink it
This is my number one piece of advice. It’s easy to get caught up in the pressure and stress of a wedding day, but where possible, kick back and let us see the whole you – and that doesn’t just mean what you look like, but also your inner qualities such as inner beauty, strength, vulnerability. This will 100 per cent create a better end result. Every time.
