Should you do a First Look

The private moment before the ceremony, away from the eyes of family and friends, is an extraordinary moment worth capturing.

To set eyes on each other before the ceremony is often a very intimate moment, connecting the two of you before the big entrance. Although a newer wedding day tradition, it’s a perfect way to overcome stress or nerves and take a big breath.

First Look Benefits

Many of our clients say by having a first look built into their day, they are actually calmer and more present during the ceremony. They also say it doesn’t take away that feeling of seeing each other as they walk down the aisle for the first time.
If you’re a relatively self-conscious, shy or introverted person, it’s often so enriching to have this moment without anyone’s eyes on you. No guests taking photos, no bridal party cheering or clapping. Just a serene moment of connection between the two of you.

Why is it so special?

What also makes a first look special is that it’s often at this moment that the true emotion and depth of love can be captured on camera. You can choose the location for your first look, and we can control the setting and the lighting so that the photos will be outstanding. Often, that’s not usually an option during the ceremony or at a winter wedding where it may get dark early.

Most of all, it gives you options. If you think you might cry some sweet tears when you see each other for the first time, you’ll be able to freshen up before the actual ceremony. If you think you’ll miss time with friends after the ceremony due to all the list of photos, we can take portraits and formal family shots before the ceremony. If you’re worried about how you might react, you can get past that in a private setting, away from the gaze of others.

Whenever we do a first look session, we always do a few sunset photos as well, so you get a complete story of your whole day captured in images.

For others, the idea of a first look can feel weird. We get that. You may need to get up earlier to fit it all in, and of course, you won’t actually be married in these photos. Whatever you decide about doing a first look or not, it’s got to be your decision. After all, it’s your day as a couple – no one else’s!
