When is the right time to propose?

When should you propose?

Popping the proposal question may be a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, so you’ll want to get it right. Here are my tips for creating the perfect proposal.

Talk to the family first

It may be worth chatting through your intentions with your future spouse’s family. They will love you for it, of course, and you’re also likely to get some proposal ideas or some insights into your partner’s preferences. It’s a demonstration of your love for the whole family, not just your partner.

Choosing a ring

There are three decisions to make here: the metal (white gold, rose gold, platinum, silver, titanium etc.), the stone shape (round, oval, princess, heart etc.) and style (vintage, classic, elegant, glamorous etc.) It can be daunting, especially added to that getting the right ring size. My advice is to not stress too much about this – rings can always be resized. Better to err on the side of caution by making it bigger than smaller, and then perfecting it later on.

Set the scene

From karaoke performances to secret photoshoots, there are countless ways to pop the question. I think the overriding factor is that it needs to be unmistakably memorable and unique to you both. Be thoughtful to your partner’s personality and preferences, and you can’t go too far wrong. There are loads of ideas online, but make sure it feels right to you.

Pick your timing

Timing is important. Both from a weather perspective (if you’re planning to be outside) but also from your partner’s schedule and commitments. Also, you might want to wait until she’s just had a manicure for those Instagram shots.

Speech

Think about the words you’ll use before the moment is upon you. Again, it’s about keeping it personal and just right for you both!

Remember to celebrate

When you get the “Yes!” it’s important to relish the moment and celebrate. You may be feeling a mixture of feelings at the time but remember to breathe and soak in the love!
