The groom’s guide to choosing his wedding suit

What are the rules for what the groom can and cannot wear, and how do you go about choosing your wedding suit?

  • Post-COVID and a lot of the rules of what a groom can wear have gone out the window. It really depends on what kind of wedding you’re having. So, the number one rule for choosing your suit is to consider the setting. A casual beach backdrop, a formal church setting, a natural outdoorsy sanctuary or anything in between will largely dictate the direction you need to take with your suit.

  • The other important rule to follow is to think about your colours. Keep in mind colours and shades that sit nicely next to each other. It’s probably worth seeking the advice of a colour consultant on what tones suit your skin. And you’ll want to complement what your fiancé is wearing, as well as the bridal colours, flowers and other accessories of the day.

  • The fit is the most critical factor when it comes to choosing a suit. This means, wherever possible, have your suit made to measure. You will look and feel a million dollars, and the photos will look outstanding, too. And a measured-to-you suit will last the distance, making it a worthwhile investment if there isn’t much fluctuation in your size and shape, of course! If budget is tight, then a rental suit is always an option.

  • A fancy three-piece suit seems to be winning out over tailcoats and tuxedos for contemporary weddings. A smart worsted wool twill or plain weave is always a good place to start for a winter wedding. It’ll have some body to it, but it’s not too over the top in weight or texture. Any shades of navy or grey are always popular and flattering and won’t lose its fashion appeal.

  • For a summer beach wedding, I would recommend keeping it light, both in fabric weight and tones. Linen or cotton works well, and stone greys and blues can look great.

  • All eyes will be on the two of you, so make sure you feel confident and relaxed in whatever you choose.
