What to avoid when it comes to portraits

Even the most perfectly planned wedding can get a bit chaotic at times. So check out our tips on what to avoid when it comes to portraits so that you can leave the stressful moments for someone else!

Avoid the time warp

Find out how much time your wedding photographer will need for portraits. Remember that time tends to warp a bit, so it’s worth creating a wedding day timeline early on, so you know just how much time you’ve got for everything. You don’t want to muck up your wedding day photos because you are stressed out and rushing everywhere.

Avoid crappy light

You’re going to need times of the day scheduled with your photographer when the light is optimal for portraits. That typically means mornings and evenings, as this offers the softest light as the lower sun casts softer shadows.

Avoid being a martyr

Remember, this is your day, so it’s got to work for you. Attend to your basic needs of eating and drinking, especially before the portraits. This way, you’re more likely to be relaxed and at ease (hands up, who gets hangry?!). Put your coordinator in charge of bringing you plenty of snacks to keep you going throughout the day.

Avoid being in the spotlight all the time

There’s nothing wrong with sending your bridal party back to the reception, so you have time without distractions when it comes to taking photographs. The fewer interruptions you get with the photographer, the quicker we can be. And if you as a couple are more present to each other, we can capture the moments more easily.

Avoid doing it all yourself

Ask your coordinator or trusted bridesmaids to attend the portrait shoot, too, so you have the most incredible time. They can fluff the dress and attend to your every whim – whether that’s grabbing the mascara or a bottle of water to keep you hydrated.
